Does lemongrass and lemon aromatherapy reduce PMS symptoms in adolescent girls?
The aromatherapy was associated with improvement in PMS symptoms in this study.
What they did
30 adolescent girls received lemongrass and lemon aromatherapy. Symptoms were measured before and after using a pain intensity questionnaire and observation forms. A statistical test was used to analyze the changes.
What they found
Before aromatherapy, 35.0% of girls had severe PMS symptoms. After aromatherapy, 40.0% had moderate PMS symptoms, suggesting improvement. The difference was significant.
What it means for you
Lemongrass and lemon aromatherapy may help reduce PMS symptoms in adolescent girls. However, this is a very small study with no control group to compare to, so we cannot be confident this will work for others. The study was done in one school in Indonesia.
