Does acupressure help relieve PMS symptoms?
Acupressure reduced PMS symptom severity and improved ability to function in nursing students. The study did not have a control group and reported results qualitatively, so we cannot be very confident about how much improvement occurred.
What they did
Quasi-experimental design. 135 third-year female nursing students at Tanta University received acupressure. PMS symptoms and ability to function were measured using standard screening tools before and after the first menstrual cycle following the intervention.
What they found
Acupressure led to significant reduction in PMS symptom severity and improved ability to function. There was a strong positive correlation between total PMS severity score and interference with ability to function after the first menstrual cycle following acupressure.
What it means for you
Acupressure may help reduce PMS symptoms and improve function. The study lacked a control group to compare against, included only nursing students at one university, and reported results qualitatively rather than with specific measurements, which limits confidence in the findings.

Premenstrual syndrome (PMS) is an important health problem that includescomplex symptoms and negatively influences the quality of life of womenespecially students. These symptoms may have a detrimental influence on students'attendance, academic performance and social activities. Acupressure is a nursingintervention that is used to manage a variety of health issues, including PMS. Thestudy aim: Establish the effect of acupressure on relieving PMS symptoms amongfemale nursing students. Study Design: A quasi-experimental design. Subjects: Aconvenient sample of 135 adolescent females at Tanta University's Nursing Facultyduring the third year of the 2024-2025 academic years. Study Tools: Two toolswere utilized: Tool I: A Structured interview schedule: It was composed of twocomponents: Part 1: Socio- demographic data and Part 2: Menstrual history. ToolII: PMSST: Part 1: Premenstrual Symptoms Screening Tool for Adolescents(PSST-A) and Part 2: A student’s symptoms ability to function. Results: asignificant reduction in the severity of PMS symptoms after the intervention, acupressure contributed to improved ability to function and there is strong positivecorrelation among the studied nursing students' total score of PMSS severity andtotal score of its interference with their ability to function after 1st menstrual cyclepost acupressure. Conclusion: It was determined that acupressure was helpful andreduced the symptoms of pms. Recommendations: The administrator should planfrequent in-service training sessions about the importance of acupressure and howto use it based on the issues facing teenage girls
