Does royal jelly reduce premenstrual syndrome symptoms?
Yes, significantly. After 2 months, women taking royal jelly had their PMS scores drop by about half, while those taking placebo had almost no change.
What they did
A randomized triple-blind placebo-controlled trial with 110 medical students in Tehran. Women in the intervention group took one 1000mg royal jelly capsule daily starting on the first day of menstruation and continued for 2 consecutive menstrual cycles. The control group took placebo capsules the same way. Researchers measured PMS scores using the Premenstrual Profile 2005.
What they found
Royal jelly group PMS score decreased from 23.17 ± 17.43 to 11.42 ± 14.58 (mean change 11.75). Placebo group PMS score changed from 21.48 ± 16.39 to 20.27 ± 15.76 (mean change 1.20). The difference between groups was significant.
What it means for you
Royal jelly appears to reduce PMS considerably. However, the study was only of medical students in Tehran so results may not apply to all women.
