Does venlafaxine help women with PMDD?
Yes. This small study found venlafaxine significantly improved PMDD symptoms in Asian women.
What they did
Thirty women with PMDD were treated with flexible-dose venlafaxine for two menstrual cycles. Symptom severity was assessed every 2 weeks using multiple rating scales.
What they found
Twenty women completed the trial. All participants showed significant improvement in mood and behavior symptoms. Venlafaxine at mean dose 60.1 +/- 29.1 mg per day was effective.
What it means for you
Venlafaxine may help PMDD symptoms, though this was a small, uncontrolled study without a placebo group to confirm the effect was due to the medication.
