Does yoga help sleep problems in women with premenstrual syndrome?
Yes. Yoga significantly improved sleep quality, sleep efficiency, and how quickly women fell asleep compared to doing nothing.
What they did
62 women aged 20-45 with PMS in Tabriz, Iran were randomly divided into two equal groups. One group did yoga for 10 weeks (3 sessions per week, 60 minutes each). The other group did no yoga. Both groups filled out sleep quality questionnaires before and after.
What they found
Compared to the control group, women who did yoga showed significant improvements in sleeping (P < .05), sleep quality (P < .01), how quickly they fell asleep (P < .01), and sleep efficiency (P < .05).
What it means for you
Yoga may help women with PMS who have sleep problems. The study was small and in one location only, so larger studies are needed. The control group did nothing, so some improvement might have come from attention or expectation rather than yoga itself.
