Is Ganyushu Granule effective and safe for premenstrual syndrome?

Yes, both high-dose and low-dose Ganyushu Granule reduced PMS symptoms better than placebo starting from the second cycle, with high-dose showing the fastest improvement and no serious side effects.

Strong study design 240 women with premenstrual syndrome and liver depression/qi stagnation in China

What they did

Randomized controlled trial from June 2018 to March 2021 with 240 women with PMS and liver depression/qi stagnation. Women were divided into three groups: high-dose Ganyushu Granule (78 women), low-dose Ganyushu Granule (82 women), and placebo (80 women). Treatment was taken 3 times daily for up to 3 menstrual cycles.

What they found

Starting from the 2nd cycle, both high and low-dose groups had lower PMS diary scores than placebo (P<0.05). The high-dose group had lower tension scores after the 1st cycle and the best Chinese medicine syndrome improvement after the 2nd cycle. No serious adverse reactions were reported in any group.

What it means for you

Ganyushu Granule appears to safely reduce PMS symptoms, with higher doses working faster. The study was conducted only in China for one specific PMS pattern, so results may not apply to all women or other countries.
