Does laser acupuncture with relaxation technique help premenstrual tension?

Yes. Laser acupuncture combined with a relaxation technique reduced muscle tension, heart rate, and breathing rate in women with premenstrual tension.

Early or limited evidence 30 young women aged 17 to 22 with PMS from Faculty of Physical Therapy at Kaferelsheik University in Egypt

What they did

This was a randomized controlled trial of 30 young women with PMS aged 17-22. The control group received vitamin B6 and calcium once daily. The treatment group received the same supplements plus treadmill training 3 times per week for 3 months, plus laser acupuncture and Mitchell's relaxation technique (30 minutes per session, 3 times per week before menstruation for 2 cycles).

What they found

The treatment group showed significant reduction in muscle tension (measured by EMG activity in the trapezius muscles), pulse rate, and respiratory rate (p<0.05).

What it means for you

Laser acupuncture and relaxation may help reduce physical tension of premenstrual syndrome. This was a small study of young women from one university in Egypt, so results may not apply to older women or other populations.
