Case-control study, 2025

Do women with rheumatoid arthritis have more PMDD?

Yes. Women with rheumatoid arthritis are 4.54 times more likely to have PMDD (24% vs 6%) and 4.9 times more likely to experience functional impairment from PMDD compared to healthy women.

Moderate study design 67 women with rheumatoid arthritis and 67 healthy controls in Mexico, mean age 39.8

What they did

Cross-sectional study comparing 67 women with rheumatoid arthritis to 67 healthy women in Mexico, matched by age (mean 39.8 years). Used a screening tool to assess for PMDD and its impact on daily functioning.

What they found

PMDD was present in 24% of RA patients (15 women) versus 6% of controls (4 women). Functional impairment from PMDD was more common in RA patients (28.4%, 19 women) than controls (7.5%, 4 women). Women with RA had 4.54 times higher odds of PMDD and 4.9 times higher odds of functional impairment.

What it means for you

The inflammation from rheumatoid arthritis may increase PMDD risk or severity. This is one study from one center in Mexico, so results may not apply to all populations. More research is needed.
