What factors are related to PMS in high school girls?

Stress was the only factor significantly related to PMS in high school girls. Girls with moderate stress levels were more likely to have PMS, but age at first period, body weight, diet, and physical activity were not significantly related.

Moderate study design 180 high school girls

What they did

180 high school girls were asked about their age at first period, body mass index, stress level, diet quality, and physical activity level. Researchers measured the statistical relationship between each factor and PMS using standardized tests.

What they found

Most girls had normal age at first period, normal body mass index, moderate stress, unhealthy diet, and light physical activity. Only stress showed a significant relationship with PMS (p-value 0.000), meaning this relationship was very unlikely to occur by chance. Age at first period, body mass index, diet, and physical activity did not show significant relationships with PMS.

What it means for you

Stress appears to be an important factor in PMS for high school girls, while diet and exercise did not show significant links in this study. This suggests mental health support for stress reduction might help. The main limitation is the cross-sectional design, which cannot prove stress causes PMS rather than PMS causing stress.
