How do emotions and quality of life affect depression in women with PMDD?

Women with PMDD who experienced more positive emotions reported better quality of life and less depression. Those with more negative emotions had worse quality of life and more depression.

Early or limited evidence 70 women aged 16 to 30 with premenstrual dysphoric disorder.

What they did

Researchers studied 70 women aged 16 to 30 who had premenstrual dysphoric disorder. They measured how much positive and negative emotions each woman experienced, how satisfied she was with her quality of life, and how much depression she had. They looked at how these factors were related to each other.

What they found

When women had more positive emotions, their quality of life was better and they had less depression. When women had more negative emotions, their quality of life was worse and they had more depression. Negative emotions were the strongest factor linked to depression in women with PMDD.

What it means for you

Managing emotions, especially reducing negative emotions, may be important for improving depression and quality of life in women with PMDD. However, this study only looked at relationships between these factors, not whether managing emotions actually helps. The sample was small and only included women aged 16 to 30.
