Survey study, 2020

Does what teenage girls know about PMS and how they feel about it affect whether they have symptoms?

Yes. Both what girls knew about PMS and how they felt about it were linked to whether they had symptoms.

Early or limited evidence 59 girls in a village in Takalar, Indonesia

What they did

Researchers surveyed all 59 girls in a village in Takalar, Indonesia in 2020. They asked them about their knowledge of PMS, their attitude toward PMS, and whether they had PMS symptoms.

What they found

Girls' knowledge was linked to whether they had PMS symptoms. Girls' attitudes were also linked to whether they had PMS symptoms.

What it means for you

Both knowledge and attitude about PMS appeared linked to having symptoms, though the study does not explain why. The main limits are that this was a small study in one village, and because it is observational we cannot tell if knowledge and attitude actually cause symptoms or just go along with them.
