Does knowing about PMS help reduce anxiety about it in young girls?

Yes, the study found that girls with better knowledge about PMS experienced less anxiety (p=0.003). However, attitudes about menstruation alone did not significantly affect anxiety levels (p=0.303).

Early or limited evidence 119 junior and high school students (50.4% under age 15) in North Sumatra, Indonesia

What they did

Researchers surveyed 119 junior and high school students (average age about 15) in North Sumatra, Indonesia using an online questionnaire. They asked about knowledge of PMS, attitudes toward menstruation, and anxiety levels when dealing with PMS symptoms.

What they found

Knowledge about PMS was significantly linked to lower anxiety levels (p=0.003). Attitudes toward menstruation were not significantly linked to anxiety (p=0.303). Of respondents, 50.4% were younger than 15 years old. 30.3% experienced PMS symptoms before their period and 69.7% experienced them during their period.

What it means for you

Teaching girls about PMS may help reduce their anxiety about symptoms. However, simply changing attitudes about menstruation may not be enough on its own. This is a small study from one region in Indonesia, so findings may not apply elsewhere. The study shows associations but does not prove that learning about PMS causes lower anxiety.
