Survey study, 2017

Does knowledge about reproductive health help teenage girls cope with PMS better?

Yes. Girls with better knowledge about reproductive health had better efforts to cope with PMS. The relationship was moderate.

Early or limited evidence 49 teenage girls in Indonesia from one school.

What they did

Researchers surveyed 49 teenage girls from one school in Indonesia. They asked about knowledge of reproductive health and what the girls did to deal with PMS symptoms.

What they found

90% of the girls had good knowledge about reproductive health. 86% had very good efforts to cope with PMS. Girls who knew more about reproductive health were more likely to take action to manage their PMS.

What it means for you

Better knowledge about reproductive health appears connected to better coping with PMS. However, this was only one school in Indonesia, so results may not apply elsewhere. We cannot tell whether knowledge helps girls cope better or whether girls who cope better also seek out more knowledge.
