Survey study, 2020

Does knowing about PMS help young women actually manage it?

No. Most women had adequate knowledge about PMS, but almost all reported taking no steps to manage symptoms, and knowledge was not connected to action.

Early or limited evidence 36 young women in one village in Indonesia

What they did

Researchers asked 36 young women in one village in Indonesia about their knowledge of PMS and what they do to manage symptoms using a questionnaire.

What they found

63.9% of the women had adequate knowledge about PMS. However, 94.4% reported taking no steps to manage symptoms. Knowledge about PMS was not connected to whether women actually tried to manage their symptoms.

What it means for you

Simply knowing about PMS does not automatically help women take action to manage it. The study was very small and looked at only one village, so findings may not apply to other young women.
