Does magnesium help with PMS?

Magnesium appears to influence PMS symptoms and may interact with estrogen, but this is a review article, not a study of people receiving treatment, so we cannot say whether magnesium actually helps.

Early or limited evidence Not applicable (review article)

What they did

This is a review article that discusses how magnesium and estrogen may be related to PMS and other conditions. It does not report a study of actual people.

What they found

The article notes that magnesium has been used to favorably influence PMS. Estrogen affects how the body uses magnesium. When estrogen levels are high and magnesium intake is low, blood magnesium can drop, which may increase the risk of blood clots.

What it means for you

The relationship between magnesium and PMS is plausible based on how these substances work in the body. However, clinical trials would be needed to test whether magnesium supplements actually help women with PMS. This is a review article, not an empirical study.
