Study, 2020
Do girls with PMS have different progesterone hormone levels?
Yes. Girls with PMS had progesterone levels of 3.78 ng/mL, higher than girls without PMS who had 2.57 ng/mL.
What they did
Researchers studied 50 Indonesian girls: 25 with PMS and 25 without. They took blood samples 5 days before menstruation to measure progesterone hormone levels.
What they found
Girls with PMS had progesterone of 3.78 ng/mL versus 2.57 ng/mL in girls without PMS. Among girls with PMS, those with mild PMS had 4.65 ng/mL while those with severe PMS had 3.09 ng/mL.
What it means for you
Higher progesterone levels are linked to PMS, though the differences were small. The study included only 50 girls in Indonesia, so results may not apply to all girls. We cannot tell if progesterone causes PMS or is just associated with it.
