Study, 1987
Does a weak luteal phase cause PMS?
No. Women with a weak luteal phase had less severe mood symptoms and no worse physical symptoms than women with a normal luteal phase, suggesting that hormonal problems in this phase don't explain PMS.
What they did
Tested 83 infertile women using a procedure that checks if the luteal phase is working properly. They measured how severe their mood and physical PMS symptoms were compared to women with a normal luteal phase.
What they found
Women with a weak luteal phase had less severe psychological symptoms and no more severe physical symptoms compared to women with a normal luteal phase. The findings suggest that hormonal problems during the luteal phase don't link to PMS.
What it means for you
A weak luteal phase doesn't cause PMS. However, this study only included infertile women, not women with PMS, so the findings may not apply to women seeking help for PMS.
