Survey study, 1986

What health and psychological problems do women with PMS have?

Women with moderate to severe PMS had significantly more undetected medical, psychological, and marital problems than women without PMS. The study doesn't specify what those problems were.

Early or limited evidence 68 women with premenstrual symptoms and 34 control women without symptoms.

What they did

A cross-sectional study comparing 68 women who came to clinic because of PMS symptoms with 34 control women without PMS symptoms. Researchers assessed their medical, psychological, and marital characteristics.

What they found

Women with premenstrual symptoms had a significantly greater frequency of previously undetected medical, psychological, and marital problems compared to control women.

What it means for you

Women with PMS may have other health and relationship issues that need attention. A major limitation is that the abstract doesn't describe what specific problems were found. Because this is cross-sectional, we can't tell if PMS causes these problems or if they're separate issues.
