Survey study, 2009
Does the menstrual cycle affect how a girl's voice sounds or how she speaks?
No, the study found no clear differences in voice pitch, intensity, speed of speech, or other vocal qualities between the two phases of the menstrual cycle.
What they did
Measured voice and speech in 23 adolescent girls not using birth control during both the follicular and luteal phases. They used computer software to analyse fundamental frequency, voice intensity, speed of speech, and vocal modulation.
What they found
Voice characteristics were similar in both phases. Fundamental frequency was 192.6 Hz, minimum formant 891.7 Hz, maximum formant 2471.5 Hz, and vocal intensity was 61.5 dB. Speech speed was 5.2 seg/s in meaningful sentences and 1.9 seg/s in meaningless sentences.
What it means for you
The menstrual cycle doesn't seem to affect how adolescent girls speak. This is from a small cross-sectional study, and all participants were teenagers.
