Randomised trial, 2020
Does moriche palm extract help with PMS symptoms?
Yes. In a trial of 43 women over 8 weeks, moriche palm extract improved water retention, concentration problems, and mood control during the menstrual period compared to placebo.
What they did
Randomized, double-blind trial comparing moriche palm extract 100 mg daily to placebo in 44 Japanese women with PMS symptoms. Women took capsules for 8 weeks and filled out symptom questionnaires at 4 and 8 weeks.
What they found
After 8 weeks, women taking moriche palm extract had significant improvements in water retention, concentration problems, and emotional control during menstruation. After 4 weeks, anxiety in the premenstrual period improved. Overall quality of life scores did not improve more than placebo. No safety concerns were found.
What it means for you
Moriche palm extract may help with specific PMS symptoms like water retention and concentration, but did not improve general quality of life. The study was small with only 21-22 women per group. It was done in Japan so the results may not apply elsewhere.
