Survey study, 2017

Are exercise and sleep linked to PMS?

Yes, women who exercise regularly and sleep well are less likely to have PMS symptoms than those with poor exercise and sleep habits.

Early or limited evidence 141 midwifery students in Cirebon

What they did

Researchers asked 141 midwifery students about their exercise habits, sleep patterns, and PMS symptoms.

What they found

68.8% of students did not exercise regularly, 66% had poor sleep patterns, and 68.8% experienced moderate to severe PMS. Students with poor sleep and no regular exercise were more likely to have PMS.

What it means for you

Getting more exercise and better sleep might help reduce PMS, but this study only shows that these habits are connected to PMS, not that they cause symptoms to change. The main limit is the study does not say how much exercise or how many hours of sleep are needed.
