Survey study, 2023
What oral symptoms do women experience before their period?
Dry mouth affects 29.9% of women in the premenstrual phase, followed by taste changes (25.3%) and swelling sensations (18.4%). The study had no control group to compare with women who don't have PMS.
What they did
Cross-sectional survey of 435 women in Pakistan who were asked about their age, menstrual cycle regularity, and any unusual oral symptoms during the premenstrual phase.
What they found
29.9% reported dry mouth, 25.3% taste alteration, 18.4% swelling, 17% tingling, 11.7% burning sensation, 3.2% excess saliva, and 2.5% gum disease. Age showed weak association with some symptoms but menstrual irregularity did not.
