Survey study, 2022
Does exercising regularly stop PMS symptoms in students?
In this small study, students who exercised regularly did not have fewer PMS symptoms. In fact, PMS was more common among those who exercised regularly, but this study cannot show that exercise caused it.
What they did
A descriptive study surveyed 24 health information management students at a university in Indonesia using an online questionnaire, asking about their exercise habits and PMS symptoms.
What they found
54.1% of students exercised regularly. Among those with PMS, the most common emotional symptom was anger outbursts, affecting 87.5% (21 people). The most common physical symptoms were headache and stomach ache, each affecting 66.7% (16 people). PMS occurred more often in students who exercised regularly.
What it means for you
This does not mean exercise causes PMS. The study was very small (24 students), only looked at one group at one point in time, and had no control group or statistical testing, so it cannot show cause and effect.
