Case report, 1992
Does asthma get worse before periods?
One woman's asthma did get worse before her period, especially from April to October each year. Her monthly pattern of symptoms matched when asthma was common in her region, but we can't be sure this happens in other women.
What they did
Doctors followed one 19-year-old woman from 1984 to 1990 and recorded when her asthma was worse each month. They compared her monthly pattern with hospital records of when children in her region were admitted for acute asthma.
What they found
The woman had worse asthma from April through October each year. When her monthly pattern was compared to hospital admissions during those same years, there was great similarity in the patterns between the two.
What it means for you
This shows asthma can get worse before periods in some women, and may be affected by seasons. The woman had dust mite allergies, but her asthma pattern didn't match dust mite levels in her home, suggesting another cause like hormones or seasons. Since this is one woman, we don't know how common this is.
