What causes PMDD?

PMDD is caused by multiple problems in how the brain and body handle hormones and brain chemicals, not by hormone levels being too high or low. It involves changes in serotonin, GABA, how the brain responds to estrogen, and possibly genetics.

Early or limited evidence Not a research study of specific people

What they did

This is a review of existing knowledge about what causes PMDD, focusing on brain chemistry, hormones, and genetics.

What they found

PMDD involves changes in brain chemicals like serotonin and GABA, and in how sensitive the brain is to normal estrogen levels. A gene called ESR1 may also be involved.

What it means for you

PMDD is complex and involves multiple brain and body systems, not one single cause. Understanding these systems helps explain why different treatments work for different women. This is a summary of existing knowledge rather than new research testing a specific treatment.
