Study, 2021

Is PMS linked to how women feel about their health?

Yes. Women with higher PMS symptoms reported worse health perception. The higher the PMS symptoms, the worse women felt about their overall health.

Moderate study design 716 university students in Turkey

What they did

Seven hundred sixteen university students completed surveys about PMS symptoms and how they felt about their own health between January and March 2020. Researchers looked for connections between PMS symptom severity and health perception.

What they found

About 60.3% of students experienced PMS. Students with higher PMS symptoms had lower health perception scores. The study found that as PMS symptoms increased, health perception decreased.

What it means for you

Higher PMS symptoms are linked to worse perceptions of overall health. Better management of PMS might improve how women feel about their health generally. The study only looked at university students in one country, so results may not apply to all women.
