Survey study, 1995

Do premenstrual symptoms differ between rural and urban Mexican women?

Physical symptoms were similar. Urban women reported more severe psychological and behavioral symptoms than rural women.

Early or limited evidence 100 Mexican women; 50 living in a rural zone, 50 in an urban zone

What they did

Compared 50 rural and 50 urban Mexican women. They asked them to record premenstrual and postmenstrual symptoms during one menstrual cycle using a symptom questionnaire.

What they found

97% of women had at least one premenstrual physical symptom, and 95% had a psychological or behavioral symptom. The severity of physical symptoms was similar between rural and urban women. Urban women reported more severe psychological and behavioral symptoms than rural women.

What it means for you

Premenstrual symptoms are extremely common in Mexican women regardless of where they live. Urban women may experience more severe psychological symptoms, possibly related to lifestyle stress, but the study cannot explain why. It only measured one menstrual cycle per woman.
