How does PMS affect women's quality of life?

Researchers created a scale to measure how PMS affects quality of life across physical, emotional, and social areas. Higher PMS severity and living in cities both significantly lower quality of life.

Moderate study design 260 women in validation phase, 212 women diagnosed with PMS in final testing phase

What they did

Methodological study in three phases to develop a PMS Quality-of-Life Scale. Phase one conducted a literature review and interviews to create scale items. Phase two tested the scale with 260 women to check validity and reliability. Phase three tested it with 212 women diagnosed with PMS.

What they found

The final scale had 28 items and showed good validity and reliability. Age and age at first period had no significant connection to quality of life scores. Higher PMS severity and urban living both significantly lowered quality of life scores.

What it means for you

A new tool now exists to measure the full impact of PMS on women's lives. Severity of PMS and living in cities worsen how much PMS impacts daily life. This study only developed and tested a measurement tool, it did not test any treatment. Age does not seem to affect how much PMS impacts quality of life.
