Survey study, 2011

How do women with PMS experience and manage their symptoms?

Most women (79%) experience moderate to high PMS symptoms, but few use management methods and those that do find them mostly ineffective. We have low confidence as this is one observational study from one clinic.

Early or limited evidence 379 women aged 15-49 in Turkey attending primary care

What they did

Descriptive study of 379 women aged 15-49 attending a primary care center in Turkey from May to December 2006. Women completed a 44-item Premenstrual Syndrome Scale.

What they found

79% experienced moderate to high PMS symptoms. Sleep changes, pain, fatigue and irritation had the highest average scores. Few women used management methods oriented to PMS and these were mostly ineffective.

What it means for you

Many women with PMS lack effective ways to manage symptoms. The study only included one clinic in Turkey, so results may not apply elsewhere.
