Survey study, 2014

How common are PMS and PMDD in middle-aged women going through perimenopause?

Approximately 95% of perimenopausal women had PMS and 23% had PMDD. Women with PMDD were significantly more likely to have severe menstrual pain.

Early or limited evidence 100 perimenopausal women aged 43-53

What they did

100 perimenopausal women aged 43-53 completed a questionnaire survey about premenstrual symptoms. Their menstruation patterns and menstrual pain severity were assessed, and PMS and PMDD were diagnosed using standard criteria.

What they found

Approximately 95% met criteria for PMS and 23% met criteria for PMDD. The most common symptoms were breast tenderness, abdominal bloating, and headache. PMDD was significantly associated with more severe dysmenorrhea (p=0.020).

What it means for you

Most perimenopausal women experience PMS and PMDD, which impact their daily activities, but many may not be aware of these conditions. The study was conducted in one hospital setting, so results may not apply to all perimenopausal women.
