How common is premenstrual syndrome and how should it be treated?

Premenstrual syndrome significantly reduces women's quality of life. We still do not fully understand what causes it. Treatment should be different for each woman depending on her overall health, other medical conditions, how severe her PMS is, and how well she tolerates different treatments.

Early or limited evidence Review article - not based on a specific studied population

What they did

This is a review article discussing what we know about PMS causes, how to diagnose it, and treatment and prevention approaches.

What they found

PMS is a pathological symptom that significantly lowers quality of life. The underlying causes and mechanisms are still not well understood. Treatment needs to be tailored to each woman based on her health situation and severity.

What it means for you

There is no single treatment that works for all women with PMS. Each woman needs a treatment plan based on her individual health, other conditions, and how severe her symptoms are. This is a review summarizing existing knowledge rather than new research data.
