Non-randomised trial, 1997
Does the flavonoid supplement Daflon 500 mg reduce PMS symptoms?
Yes, though results need confirmation. PMS disappeared completely in 37.4 percent. Duration dropped 2.6 days. Bloating decreased 60 percent. But there was no control group, so certainty is limited.
What they did
1473 women with PMS took Daflon 500 mg (2 tablets daily) for 3 menstrual cycles. Symptoms were tracked daily with a 24-item diary, plus weight and body measurements.
What they found
PMS disappeared completely in 37.4 percent of women. Average duration decreased 2.6 days (p less than 0.0001). Congestion and bloating symptoms decreased about 60 percent. Weight gain decreased 29 percent.
What it means for you
This flavonoid may help PMS bloating, especially for women with congestive symptoms. Limitation: open-label design and no control group means improvements might include placebo effect. Results need confirmation in controlled study.
