Survey study, 2024

How common is PMS in female medical students in Vietnam and does it affect their exam attendance?

Most female medical students experience PMS symptoms, but most do not miss exams because of them. Among 231 students, 94.8% never missed exams and only 0.4% consistently missed exams.

Early or limited evidence 231 female medical students in Vietnam.

What they did

Cross-sectional survey of 231 female medical students in Vietnam using questionnaires. Researchers collected information about PMS symptoms, menstrual cycle characteristics including menstrual cramps, and exam attendance patterns.

What they found

Students experienced a wide range of PMS symptoms. However, 94.8% never missed exams and only 0.4% consistently missed exams. There was a correlation between the severity of menstrual cramps throughout the cycle and the risk of experiencing moderate to severe PMS.

What it means for you

PMS causes many physical and psychological symptoms and affects quality of life, but most female medical students continue attending exams despite symptoms, likely due to high academic commitment. This study only included medical students in Vietnam, so results may not apply to other populations or women outside school.
