Survey study, 2020

How many adolescent girls have PMS, and does teaching them about it help?

More than 50% of adolescent girls have PMS. Most girls lack knowledge about what PMS is, but educational programs significantly improve their knowledge.

Moderate study design Adolescent girls, across 18 studies spanning 2008-2019

What they did

Systematic review of 18 published research articles from 2008-2019 about PMS in adolescent girls. The initial search found 874 articles, which were narrowed to 18 reviewed studies.

What they found

Each of the 18 studies showed more than 50% of adolescent girls suffered from PMS. Girls had little or insufficient knowledge about what PMS is. Any educational intervention improved girls' knowledge about PMS, demonstrating the effectiveness of teaching programs.

What it means for you

PMS is very common in teenagers, affecting the majority, but most know little about it. School-based education programs could help girls understand and manage their symptoms. Only English-language articles were reviewed, so findings may not represent non-English-speaking countries.
