Survey study, 2025
How common is PMS or PMDD in Indian women and how much do they know about it?
Very common. 92% had symptoms and 78% screened positive for PMS or PMDD. But 85% had little or no knowledge about these conditions.
What they did
Cross-sectional study of 450 women of reproductive age in India. They used a self-designed screening questionnaire based on behavioral and physical symptoms scored on a Likert scale.
What they found
414 women (92%) had symptoms. 351 (78%) screened positive for PMS/PMDD: 189 (42%) had PMS and 162 (36%) had PMDD. Among those, 18 (4%) had severe PMS affecting daily life and 288 (64%) had moderate PMS. 382 (85%) had no or minimal knowledge. Severity was linked to BMI, lifestyle, and conditions like polycystic ovarian syndrome and diabetes.
What it means for you
Most Indian women experience PMS symptoms but lack awareness or knowledge about how to identify it. The main limit is the study used a self-designed questionnaire rather than an established validated tool.
