Survey study, 1991
What percentage of Pakistani women have PMS?
33% of the 1600 women in Karachi had PMS. It was more common in women with lower socioeconomic status.
What they did
Cross-sectional survey of 1600 women from different socioeconomic groups in Karachi, Pakistan, asked about PMS symptoms.
What they found
33% had PMS. Prevalence was higher in lower socioeconomic groups living in socially deprived areas. It was lower in women with low parity (few children). Main complaints were lower abdominal pain, cramps, and backache. Most were not receiving treatment.
What it means for you
About one third of these Pakistani women had PMS, with higher rates among poorer women. This is a one-country, one-city survey, so we don't know if these findings apply elsewhere.
