Survey study, 2012
How does PMDD affect quality of life?
Women with PMDD have lower quality of life than women without it, with more problems in emotional health, family relationships, and social connections, plus more depression and anxiety.
What they did
Researchers compared 34 women with PMDD to 34 healthy women matched for age, education level, and social class. Both groups completed questionnaires about quality of life, mental health symptoms, and how well they function socially.
What they found
Women with PMDD reported lower quality of life scores. They had worse emotional adjustment, family relationships, and social functioning. They experienced more depression, anxiety, obsessive thinking, and physical symptom concerns compared to the control group.
What it means for you
PMDD significantly impacts multiple areas of women's lives and wellbeing. The main limits are the study was small, used women's own reports of symptoms, and was conducted in one country.
