Survey study, 2021

Are stress, eating habits and exercise linked to PMS, and does knowledge matter?

Stress, eating patterns, and exercise patterns were all linked to PMS, but how much a girl knew about PMS was not linked to whether she had it.

Early or limited evidence 60 adolescent girls (sampled from a population of 154) at a junior high school in Binjai, Indonesia

What they did

A cross-sectional survey of adolescent girls at SMP IT Yayasan Hj. Fauziah Binjai, Indonesia, carried out from February to August 2019. Out of a population of 154 girls, 60 were chosen by stratified random sampling and assessed with observation sheets, with results analyzed using chi-square tests.

What they found

Knowledge about PMS was not significantly linked to PMS (p-value = .116). Stress, consumption (eating) patterns, and exercise patterns were all significantly linked to PMS (p-value = 0,000 for each).

What it means for you

Lifestyle factors like stress, diet, and exercise seem to matter more for PMS than simply knowing facts about it. Because this is a cross-sectional study of a small sample from one school, it cannot show that these factors cause PMS, only that they tend to occur together.
