Survey study, 2015
What is the frequency and severity of PMS in college girls aged 18-25?
The study found that 55% of college girls had PMS, with 48% experiencing mild symptoms, 27% moderate, and 25% severe. Confidence is limited because this was done at one college in India.
What they did
Observational cross-sectional study at one medical college in India. 400 college girls aged 18-25 completed the Moos Menstrual Distress Questionnaire. Results were analysed using ICD-10 criteria.
What they found
55% of women met PMS criteria according to ICD-10. Among those with PMS, 48% had mild severity, 27% moderate, and 25% severe. The most common symptoms were general body discomfort, anxiety, backache, fatigue and depression.
What it means for you
About half of college-aged women in this sample had PMS, with symptoms ranging from mild to severe. The study suggests doctors should recommend lifestyle changes. Results come from only one college in India and may not represent all women.
