Moderate study design 275 girls aged 13 to 22 in India

What they did

Researchers surveyed 275 girls aged 13 to 22 at schools and colleges in Kadapa, India. They asked about premenstrual symptoms and whether family members had PMS.

What they found

Of the 275 girls, 76 (27.6%) reported premenstrual syndrome, and 5 (6.7%) reported severe syndrome. The most common symptom was fatigue (162 girls, 58.9%), followed by backache (165 girls, 60%). Girls aged 19 to 22 had the highest prevalence at 30.3 percent. Among girls with premenstrual syndrome, 61 (41.2%) had family members with PMS.

What it means for you

Premenstrual syndrome is fairly common in girls and young women, with about one in four experiencing symptoms. Having family members with PMS raises a girl's risk. This study was done in India, so results may not apply everywhere.
