Does bromocryptine help with breast pain?

A study of 15 women with breast pain treated them with bromocryptine for 2 to 4 weeks. Ten recovered completely, 3 improved somewhat, and 2 saw no benefit.

Early or limited evidence 15 women with breast pain, some also with breast secretion

What they did

Researchers gave 15 women with breast pain bromocryptine (a drug that blocks prolactin), 5 mg per day, for 2 to 4 weeks.

What they found

10 of the 15 women recovered completely from breast pain, 3 showed some improvement, and 2 had no response. Five women also had breast secretion, which improved with treatment. The prolactin levels measured in these women were in the normal range before treatment, suggesting that prolactin alone does not explain breast pain.

What it means for you

Bromocryptine may help some women with breast pain but not all. This is a very small uncontrolled study without a comparison group, so we cannot be confident these results apply to other women. Symptoms may return if women stop taking the medication.
