Survey study, 2018

Does group counseling help reduce premenstrual syndrome?

Group counseling reduced symptom severity compared to no counseling in this trial. Three sessions discussing premenstrual syndrome and self-awareness appeared effective for high school girls.

Moderate study design 215 high school girls aged 15-17 in Hamadan, Iran; 120 selected had moderate to severe symptoms

What they did

Researchers recruited 215 high school girls aged 15-17. They selected 120 with moderate to severe symptoms, divided into two groups of 60. The intervention group attended 3 counseling sessions about premenstrual syndrome and self-awareness, while the control group received no counseling.

What they found

When comparing the intervention and control groups after counseling ended, the girls who attended counseling showed a clear decrease in symptom severity compared to the control group. When looking at before and after changes within each group separately, there was no clear change in severity.

What it means for you

Group counseling can help high school girls reduce their premenstrual syndrome symptoms. The main limitation is that the study was conducted in one region of Iran and included only teenagers, so results may differ for adult women or in other countries.
