Moderate study design 120 high school girls in Hamadan, Iran with PMS

What they did

Randomized controlled trial with 120 high school girls in Hamadan, Iran with PMS. The intervention group of 60 girls attended eight 1-hour sessions of resilience counseling. The control group of 60 received no intervention. Researchers measured PMS severity and resilience scores before and after.

What they found

At baseline, 61.7% of the intervention group and 63.3% of the control group had severe PMS. After counseling, 36.7% of the intervention group reported mild symptoms and 46.4% reported moderate symptoms (statistically significant change). The control group showed no significant improvement. Resilience scores in the intervention group increased from 50.5 to 67.3.

What it means for you

Counseling focused on building resilience may help teenage girls with PMS feel better and improve their ability to cope. The study was conducted in one city in Iran, so we would need to test this in other places to see if results apply everywhere.
