Randomised trial, 2013

Do Kinesio taping and spiral taping help with menstrual pain and PMS symptoms?

Both Kinesio and spiral taping reduced menstrual pain, with spiral taping also helping PMS symptoms. The study was small with only a few weeks of treatment.

Early or limited evidence 34 unmarried women with regular menstrual cycles

What they did

34 unmarried women with regular menstrual cycles were randomly divided into three groups: Kinesio taping, spiral taping and control. The taping groups received 6 taping sessions over about 3 weeks, twice a week, starting 14 days before menstruation and continuing until its end. Menstrual pain and PMS were measured before taping started.

What they found

Kinesio taping had significant effects on menstrual pain. Spiral taping was effective at alleviating both menstrual pain and premenstrual syndrome. Both taping methods brought significant relief to menstrual pain.

What it means for you

Both taping techniques appear helpful for menstrual pain, with spiral taping slightly more helpful for PMS. The study was small (34 women) and the taping only lasted a few weeks, so it is unclear how long effects last or how these methods compare in larger studies.
