Does practicing yoga twice weekly for 8 weeks reduce PMS symptoms and improve quality of life?
Yes. University students who practiced yoga twice a week for 8 weeks had significant reductions in PMS symptoms and stress, with improvements lasting 24 weeks.
What they did
An 8-week trial in Turkey with 80 female university students. One group (39 women) did yoga twice per week, the other (41 women) continued normally. Students were assessed at the start, after 8 weeks, and again at 24 weeks.
What they found
The yoga group had significantly lower PMS symptoms, less perceived stress, and better quality of life at the 8-week check-in compared to controls. These improvements persisted at 24 weeks.
What it means for you
Yoga can reduce PMS symptoms and stress while improving quality of life, with effects lasting months after sessions end. However, this study only included university students, which may not represent all women.
