Survey study, 2024

Does education about PMS help couples' satisfaction and adjustment?

Yes. Couples who received education about PMS together showed significantly better marital satisfaction and adjustment compared to couples who received no education.

Moderate study design 41 women with PMS and their spouses (intervention) and 39 women with PMS and their spouses (control) in Qom, Iran

What they did

An intervention study in 2022 with two groups: 41 women with PMS and their spouses received four two-hour education sessions on PMS, while 39 women and their spouses served as a control group. Both groups were surveyed before and after using marital satisfaction and adjustment scales.

What they found

The intervention group showed significant improvements in marital satisfaction (p = 0.01), overall dyadic adjustment (p = 0.019), the correlation dimension (p = 0.001), and affection expression (p = 0.044) compared to controls.

What it means for you

Teaching couples about PMS together improved how satisfied and adjusted they feel in their marriage. The improvements suggest that education and shared understanding matter. The study only included 41 couples in one Iranian city, so findings may not apply to all relationships or cultures.
