Does vitamin B1 help reduce mental symptoms of PMS?
Yes. Vitamin B1 significantly reduced mental symptoms by 35.08% compared to before treatment in this small study of university students.
What they did
This was a double-blind placebo-controlled trial. 80 female university students with PMS were randomly assigned to receive either vitamin B1 or placebo. Mental symptom severity was measured before and after treatment using the Beck Depression Inventory.
What they found
In the vitamin B1 group, mental symptoms were significantly reduced by 35.08% when measured after treatment compared to before. The study reported no side effects.
What it means for you
Vitamin B1 may help reduce mental symptoms of PMS. However, the study was small and only included dormitory students at one university in Iran, so results may not apply to all women with PMS.
