Survey study, 2024
Does academic stress cause worse PMS symptoms in teenage girls?
Yes, there is a clear relationship. Teenage girls with higher academic stress reported worse PMS symptoms.
What they did
99 female third-year high school students in Indonesia answered questionnaires about their academic stress and PMS symptoms from April to June 2022 during the pandemic.
What they found
There was a strong relationship between academic stress levels and PMS symptoms. Students with higher academic stress reported more severe PMS symptoms.
What it means for you
Academic stress appears linked with worse PMS symptoms in teenage girls. However, this was a single measurement study during the pandemic, so we cannot be sure that stress directly causes worse PMS or that this finding applies to other schools or countries. More research is needed.
