Survey study, 2026

Does the DSM-5 premenstrual symptom screening tool work for Turkish women?

Yes, the tool showed strong performance and accurately separated women by PMS severity. It may be useful for screening PMS according to current diagnostic standards.

Early or limited evidence 350 Turkish women aged 19-44 from gynaecology units in Istanbul

What they did

Researchers adapted a PMS screening tool from English to Turkish using standard translation methods. They tested it with 350 women aged 19-44 from gynaecology clinics in Istanbul and checked if it was reliable and valid.

What they found

The tool had excellent internal consistency (α = 0.88-0.91) and good test-retest reliability (ICC = 0.75-0.82). It explained 62.8% of symptom variation and correctly differentiated between different severity levels.

What it means for you

The Turkish version appears useful for screening PMS symptoms according to current diagnostic standards. However, the study did not fully validate the tool against clinical diagnosis, and the best cut-off scores for diagnosis still need to be determined.
