Study, 1992
Do estrogen patches help with menopausal symptoms?
In this small study, 75% of women showed improvement in menopausal symptoms after 9 weeks of treatment with estrogen patches.
What they did
33 women aged 30 to 65 received estrogen patches (Estraderm TTS-50) containing 0.004 grams of estradiol. The patches were worn for 3 weeks each month, for 9 weeks total. Researchers measured symptoms before, during, and after treatment using a standard symptom scale and blood hormone tests.
What they found
After 9 weeks, 75% of women showed improvement in symptoms. The symptom score decreased, and estradiol levels increased in their blood.
What it means for you
Estrogen patches may help some women with menopausal symptoms. However, this was a small study with no control group to compare to, so we cannot be sure the improvement came from the patches or from other causes.
